Truck accident claims in Los Angeles, California
3,934 of the 55,448 crashes officers reported in Los Angeles across 2023 and 2024 involved a commercial truck, and 1,780 of those involved a tractor-trailer combination rather than a straight truck. This is general information, not legal advice.
Why the tractor-trailer split is the useful number
A straight truck is usually one company's vehicle with one company's driver. A tractor-trailer often is not: the tractor, the trailer and the load can belong to three different businesses, and the driver may be employed by a fourth or by none of them. Every one of those relationships is a place responsibility can sit, and sorting out which is which is most of the early work in a truck case. Who is liable in a truck case.
In Los Angeles that split was 1,780 tractor-trailer crashes against 2,154 involving other commercial trucks — box trucks, tankers, tow trucks and the like. The difference between a semi and a box truck · delivery and box trucks.
Where trucks are in Los Angeles
The state-route and freeway segments named most often on Los Angeles reports were I-5 S/B (Golden State Freeway) (1,539), I-110 N/B (Harbor Freeway) (1,367), US-101 S/B (Ventura Freeway) (1,362) and I-5 N/B (Golden State Freeway) (1,286). 56% of all Los Angeles crashes carried the freeway flag. Freight follows the freeway, so a truck case here is more likely than a car case to be a CHP investigation on a state route — which changes who holds the report and how quickly it can be obtained.
What has to happen quickly
Commercial carriers run on federal safety rules — driver qualification files, hours-of-service records, inspection and maintenance records — and every one of those is a document with a retention schedule. Engine control module data can overwrite itself in a matter of days of continued driving. The single most useful thing after a truck crash is a preservation letter reaching the carrier before the ordinary cycle destroys the evidence.

Common questions
- Why does it matter whether it was a tractor-trailer?
- Because a tractor and a trailer are frequently owned, maintained and insured by different companies, and the driver may be employed by a third. That widens who can be responsible, and it is why these cases are worth sorting out early rather than after the evidence has gone.
- What evidence disappears first in a truck case?
- The electronic data. Engine control module and telematics records, hours-of-service logs and dispatch records all sit on retention schedules measured in months, and some of it overwrites itself. A preservation letter is the first thing that should go out.
- Are the rules different from a car crash?
- There is an extra layer. Commercial carriers are subject to federal safety regulations covering driver qualification, hours, inspection and maintenance, and a breach of one of those is evidence a jury can hear alongside ordinary negligence.

On a case review call, I go through the facts with you: what happened, when, whether you were hurt, whether anyone represents you, and how to reach you. It is not legal advice, and I will not put a value on your claim.
